I’ve been listening to Marshall’s recording of his book from the beginning again, in the car as I drive to work and then on my iPod as I walk to work.
The last passage I heard before swiping my security pass at my employers front door was about the word ‘feel’, and how it is so often misused in the English language. In fact, when we feel something, we do not have to use the word feel to express this.
For instance: It makes perfect sense to say, “I am sad” rather than “I feel sad”.
I love Dilbert, it’s my favourite comic, but my daily dilbert portrays this example perfectly:
Notice how his girlfriend is using the word ‘feel’ in a way that does not explain her feelings… this comic strip is doubly troubling because she’s expecting Dilbert to be responsible for her feelings by stating ‘…to make me happy.’
Yea gods… no wonder we’re all confused about how to be happy in our lives.
